But who are we, really? What a great question! My name is Katie Stout, and I've had a love for watching things grow since my grandma and grandpa took me out to the frog pond and showed me their strawberry patch back home in Illinois. To get where I am today, it took a lot of meandering through life, traveling all over the world, and landing in the desert southwest and marveling at all of the life there. I then catapulted myself into the academic world of folklore and magical cooking (yes, that exists), where I discovered that along with teaching, I loved to participate in the things I was learning about--namely, eating everything, everywhere I looked. I worked as a farm hand in Rhode Island, then moved to Central New York to be with my parents. I discovered this place is a lot like the midwest, and I quickly put down roots here, working part-time and living at Grindstone Farm in Pulaski (where they even let me erect a tipi and live in it for awhile!)
I taught English literature and introductory composition for about 13 years, alongside part-time farming, and then COVID happened. A lot changed during this time for all of us. Namely, I got canned from my teaching job. It was the biggest blessing I could have asked for. By then, my husband Andrew and I had purchased forested property in CNY, received a DEC Regenerate NY grant to steward our forest, I had completed my permaculture design certification, and all we wanted to do was work on our property and watch things grow.
Andrew Hatalla, my partner-in-purpose, is a gifted chiropractor. We opened an office for him right before COVID hit...and we decided to close it a few months into the shutdowns. When we both found ourselves not tied to careers anymore, we had this moment where our eyes met, and we knew--we are going to replicate what we are doing here for work, because there's nothing else we would rather be doing. With Andrew working for his buddy's landscaping company for the years he was in chiropractic school and setting up his business, he had enormous experience in traditional landscaping and hardscaping (great company, by the way! Distinguished Landscapes--more traditional landscaping than what we do). With our work at our homestead, we had gained lots of experience integrating food, native plants, regenerative soil building and forestry techniques, and building cool stuff!
So here we are, in 2025 several years into our adventure, excited to help you realize your dreams as we have. If you're still considering whether or not to call us, go outside and hug the first tree you see. If you feel better afterward, give us a call and tell us your wildest landscaping dreams!
